Alumni Spotlight: Roger McCann, Class of 1968
Roger McCann is a 1968 graduate of HCS from Wayne. During high school, Roger found Mr. Cutshall (Guidance) to be supportive with good advice. Much appreciation also goes to Mr. Donley (Business). Roger claims he can type to beat the band, and keyboarding has been a treasured and much used skill in his many careers. Participation in choir and band were a big focus as he became Hammondsport’s drum major and placed third in States in 1967. Mr. Reed kept the award on display for many years.
Upon graduation, Roger was accepted into the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam for nine months where he was wounded 3 times and awarded a Silver Star as well as 3 Purple Hearts. Once stateside he served at the Eighth & I Marine Barracks in Washington DC. He was assigned security details at the White House as well as Camp David. He may be the only person from Steuben County to serve at the White House.
After being discharged in 1971 Roger attended Maryland University to major in criminal justice and began working for the Secret Service. He worked under Nixon, Ford and Carter. During his service at the White House and Camp David, he was able to meet many world leaders, kings, queens, presidents, dictators, movie stars, as well as several famous musicians and celebrities.
In 1982, now with three children to consider, he brought his family home, and became head of the Irwin PD, from there he became a Sergeant in the Patrol Division of the Steuben County Sheriffs’ Department. He retired in 1994 and became the Town Justice of Campbell.
In 2000 Roger moved to Florida to work with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Department.
In 2011 he again retired and now supports his lovely wife who serves with the Sun City Center Emergency Squad. Roger is also perfecting the art of losing golf balls and being an old, retired guy! All this from a start in Hammondsport Central School!
